"If the theater has a function it is to make reality impossible. I do not care about reproducing reality on the scene. I'm interested in the opposite, defending the scene from reality, bringing another dimension, another space, another time on stage ". Thus wrote the German playwright Heiner Müller. But what if this "theatrical scene" is taken to an art gallery and if curtains, Venetian blinds, painted backgrounds take the place of paintings, photographs, sculptures? Is it the theater that disappears in the exhibition space or the theatrical exhibition space? Is it the stage machine that experiments with the visual art dimension or with art that is based on the rules of the show? But why not think of fruitful, fluid, interconnected relationships between the two languages? After all the historical avant-gardes and the subsequent season of happenings and performances have led to stages outside the canonical spaces: in the streets, in the squares, in the nature. While art has become increasingly scenographic, behavioral, able to imagine and experiment with new possible worlds: to create works-events, places-events that connect with each other.

So the exhibition Theatrum does not intend to bring in the gallery the classical components of the theater (stages, scenes, "mystical gulfs"): it does not stop to analyze the operation of the stage, dismantling the gears and studying the possible variants. But it makes its rooms a theater, a world apart, a combination of masks, mirrors, double funds. And the works of the three artists on display are a clear testimony of this. The great papers of Clara Brasca are the same, where material and dematerialization seem to coexist on the same surface, ideal portraits that come from the depth of history and friezes that regenerate, restore the lost, to make it fly again (life). But it is also the great curtain of Adriano Nardi (Theater of War), where the Roman artist tries to give substance to a dark image of the destruction of the city of Goutha in Sirya. Here the look gives the impression of literally digging into matter and painting to be tormented, interrogated, broken. So much so that the energy of the gesture matches the notions of scene and canvas, of painting and theater. The interventions by Ernesto Jannini that work on the concept of "threshold" are more complex, as if he wanted to highlight that "non-place" that always remains the theater, that elsewhere that has to do with the dream or the unconscious. He paints a sort of puppet theater (Gran Torneo), surrounded by a moving curtain or a face on a table with a Venetian curtain in front (Pulcinella robotico). He loves the balance, the imbalance, the limit, beyond which any adventure, torment or fraud can occur.

But it will be said: no text, no direction, no set design can replace the physical presence of the actor. The body is the essence of the theater itself. It is stirred, it is alive, until the representation takes place. But really, if the play is missing, everything becomes a museum, furniture, a frame? Really if you turn off the "limelight", everything stops and falls into the territories of the trivial and everyday? Or is it not rather an unexpected spell: that is, that the spectator becomes an actor, that he who listens in the darkness of the audience, invites secret words, enigmatic movements, troubled eyes? Do not you look and together is you looking? Does not he come in and out, too, from the space of the play? Does it not turn into a "character in search of an author"? So maybe "experiment" in the gallery, it is already a theatrical ritual, a performative act, a stage performance.
